Great, Great, Great Grandparents

Come to Oregon over the Oregon Trail in 1852-1854.

Here's something I found about Angeline Rudio who I think is the woman in the back, 2nd from left:

Angeline had auburn hair and blue eyes. Growing up, she lived across the river from the O'Flyngs in the John Day country of Oregon. Near Canyon City, OR is Rudio Mountain. Notes by Harlan Kahler, her grandson: "The location of the Rudio home at Monument, OR is gone but Rudio Creek and Rudio Mountain designate the area where Grandpa Rudio ran the horse ranch until 1877 when they moved to Walla Walla, WA. Grandpa was a "Forty-niner," having walked to California from Wisconsin that summer. In the 1880's my father, Frank Kahler, lived with his grandparents, the Rudios, and went to school in Walla Walla. He was educated as an accountant and went to Long Creek to work for Uncle George Rudio, who had the Long Creek Mercantile Co."
Angeline lived with daughter Eulalie in Seattle 1922-24, after the death of her husband Andrew. She then went to live with daughter May and her family in Arlington, WA. May passed away in 1925 and Angeline went to live with Eulalie and May's son Leslie in Seattle in 1926.
Angeline outlived all her children except Ross, Maude and Eulalie.
From a newspaper clipping: "Former Pioneer Resident Passes. Mrs. Angeline Kahler, a former pioneer resident of Centralia, died yesterday in Seattle. The body arrived here today and funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the M.E. church, Rev. Charles A. Bowen officiating and interment being in the Wahington Lawn cemetery (Centralia). Mrs. Kahler is survived by a son, Ross Kahler, living in Oregon, and two daughters, Mrs. E. E. Perry, San Diego, Cal., and Mrs. Eulalie Kimes, Seattle."

And about Andrew Kahler:

  • ID: I06228
  • Name: Andrew KAHLER
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 31 JUL 1845 in McConnelsville, Morgan Co., OH
  • Death: 22 MAR 1922 in Centralia, Lewis Co., WA
  • Burial: Washington Lawn Cemetery, Centralia, Lewis Co., WA

Andrew came to Oregon with his parents in 1852 at age 7. He grew to manhood at their Willow Springs home. He owned the City Drug Store in Centralia, WA from 1888-1906. Andrew and his family moved into a new house in Centralia in 1907.
Some of the Andrew Kahler family history, as written by grandson, Harlan Kahler: "Andrew went to Monument, OR to teach the Peter Rudio children. The Rudio family moved to Monument to raise horses for the mining trade. This resulted in Andrew marrying Angeline. Monument is on the North Fork of the John Day River, a few miles before joining the main stream. A few miles down river Kahler Creek empties into the John Day, while a few miles to the north is Kahler Basin. I have always thought that these places were named for Andrew. I do not know where other Kahlers lived in the John Day area. It was on Willow Creek somewhere near Monument that my father Frank was born Jan. 4, 1874. I have hunted for this place but it has eluded me. People now living in the area do not know of a Willow Creek, so the name must be changed.
"Andrew was a teacher at various places, including Hardman where he was also in the mercantile business. Hardman now is almost a ghost town. The family moved in 1889 to Chehalis, WA, and later to Centralia, only a few miles apart, where Andrew had a store when I first remember, in 1907 before Frank died at his parent's home. I remember that Aunt somebody died while we were still at the Andrew Kahler home after father died in September and now, of course, your records show that it was Aunt Rebecca. We (mother and brother and I) moved from Centralia just before Christmas but after celebrating it with Grandpa and Grandma."
From newspaper clipping: "Andrew Kahler, aged 77, died at his home, 301 J Street, yesterday morning following an illness extending over many months. He was one of the pioneers of the district having lived in Chehalis and Centralia for many years.
"The funeral service will be held this afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Pinnick chapel. Rev. Paul H. Ashby will officiate. The body will be taken to Centralia Wednesday morning where internment will be made in the Washington Lawn cemetery there.
"Mr. Kahler was born in Ohio in 1845 and in 1852, when seven years of age, moved with his parents to Jacksonvile, Oregon. The long journey was made across the plains in a schooner drawn by oxen. At the age of 28 years he was married at Cannon City, Oregon to Miss Angeline Rudio.
"They lived in John Day county until 1889 when they moved to Chehalis. Later they went to Centralia and for some years Mr. Kahler conducted a grocery business in a building where W.F. Toles' store now stands. Later he operated a greenhouse. Throughout his life he was prominent in all Methodist church work in the places in which he lived.
"Three years ago Mr. and Mrs. Kahler moved to Hoquiam so they might be near their daughter, Mrs. C. L. Gladson.
"Four of eight children survive. They are: Mrs. E. E. Perry, Olympia; Ross Kahler, Long Creek, Oregon; Mrs. Eulalie Kimes; and Mrs. C. L. Gladson of Hoquiam."
